--- Motorcycle Carrier Mounted to Trailer ---
After we bought a Polaris ATV we started to haul the ATV in a trailer I had made for a pickup I junked out. If the trailer was attached to the Suburban, then I couldn't have the bike carrier attached, so came up with the following …...
... so that we could use the bike carrier on the trailer's tongue with the ATV in the trailer. One big plus to this was that now we had long foldable ramps to load the ATV and these were also much better to load the bike with also vs. the shorter/steeper ramp that came with the bike carrier. I then had to modify the carrier and the ramps some to make this work but it was well worth it and the bike carrier can be used on either the trailer or the back of the Suburban. I do also have a receiver under the front bumper on the Suburban but have never tried carrying the bike there yet, but it is an option if I was pulling a different trailer and wanted to take the bike.
Above we can see the carrier installed on the trailer tongue.
I made some modifications to the crossmember so that one end of the carrier could be mounted there.
To remove the carrier you pull the hitch pin at this end and the othere end (picture below).
To support the other end a post was welded to the tongue's centerline.
A normal hitch pin can sucure this end or a lockable one as shown above and is what I use as the trailer sits outside.
The carrier also sits just slightly above the frame rails of the trailer. Any weight on the carrier and it rests on one of the rails.
Since we were using the trailer to also haul the ATV we needed ramps to load the ATV into the trailer. Again we went to ….
.. discountramps.com as they had long foldable rams with an excellent price. We love them in that they are very sturdy and are easy to setup and are light and easy to store.
The new end pieces for the carrier make it possible to ...
.. use the wider, longer rams on the carrier.
The front piece of the carrier was also modified for ….
. the new ramps and the ramp that is used on this end was also modified to clear the angled tire stop. The ramp still works fine on the trailer's tailgate when loading the ATV.
These ramps are a big improvement over the shorter narrower ramp that came with the carrier. We had them so, might as well use them. We run the bike up on the right and off to the left.
