......................--- Helmet Mods ---
I'd bought a …
. AFX FX-41 dual sport helmet just after buying the Suzuki DR200 dual sport and love it, but there were two small problems with it. Even though people with glasses said they had no problems with the helmet I still found it hard to slide my glasses in past the side cheek pads so decided to modify them.
On another note I ordered a medium and like it for trail riding and around town on the 200 but on longer trips on the V-Strom it would hurt my forehead after an hour or two on the road. I ordered another one in large and found that it fit my head snug and felt good but doesn't hurt my forehead like the medium does on a longer ride. Also for some reason I can slide my glasses into the large so haven't modified it like is shown below. I still use the medium on the DR200 and the large on the V-Strom.
I thought about changing to a different helmet on the V-Strom but our intercom fits the FX-41 fine and I like the helmet and Dottie wears one also so stuck with the AFX and I'm happy that I have.
This was a pretty simple mod as I just cut the top of the cheek pads off where the glasses slide in and ...
.. sewed the cut area up with a sewing machine. I did this for both sides.
One thing I really like about the FX-41 is that it uses the Euro Style helmet latch. I find it much better/easier to use vs. the D-ring's I was use to when I rode before. The negative was that there was no D-ring to use when attaching the helmet to the bike's locking helmet lock. There was plenty of length to the strap so I put a D-ring into some of the slack strap and sewed it up.
Problem fixed as now I can easily lock the helmet to the bike. I did the same to the large size helmet I bought and to Dottie's helmet. This allows any of the helmets to be locked to either of the bikes.
These were quick fixes and well worth it to make these great helmets work with the glasses and the bike helmet locks. Dottie also has no problem using glasses with her FX-41, so probably for most people it isn't a problem like it was for me with the medium helmet.
