….............--- Juniper and Aspen Trees ---
=========================================
I’m going to need trees for the layout and the majority of the trees in SE Utah are Juniper, Pinion Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Aspen Cottonwood, Scrub Oak with some other less frequent are. The high mountains on the layout are mostly Ponderosa, Aspen and Scrub Oak. The mesa tops are mostly Juniper and Pinion Pine which are pretty close in appearance.
As shown below I’ve found two pretty/fast ways to make the Juniper and Aspen Trees. Still researching Ponderosa Pine.
The trees above are about the sizes I’ll need with some slightly shorter and some slightly taller.
I’m staying pretty close to how Grant Eastman makes Aspen Trees ( Full Tutorial Here ). He has a fantastic layout and some other great videos. The main area of difference is I’m not using the melted crayon for the trunks. I’m using Golden Fiber Paste that I smear on with a brush or flat wood stir stick. Also 20 gauge bare wire, which I think is thinner that what he used. These are fast trees to make.
For the Juniper I’m staying somewhat close to how Dave Meek (Thunder Mesa Studio) makes Juniper trees as shown in this nice video ( HERE ). I’m not using the wood dowel but 14 gauge stranded wire to do the whole tree (trunk and limbs).
Check back as I’ll try and do a step-by-step on how I’m making these.
