.
Above we see the cockpit engine panel at the head of the cockpit by the companionway. Excuse the mess and the frayed traveler control line. We have a new one but no use installing it until the boat is going in the water.
You can see this panel pretty good from the helm but still there will be a second set of temperature and oil pressure gauges placed there also along with engine start and stop button. The key start above goes to the starter solenoid and the Diesel Stop Button/switch goes to the stop solenoid by the diesel that shuts off the fuel and shuts the diesel down.
I didn't like the fact that there are so many wires going to the keyed start switch. There were 3 wires on the 'Bat' terminal, 2 wires on the 'S' terminal and around 5 on the 'I' (accessory) terminal. Since I also wanted to start and stop the diesel from the helm I decided to move a lot of these wires to a terminal strip nearby on the engine side of the quarter berth.
Above we see the new terminal strip with the addition of an inline fuse and also two relays. The relays will energize the starter solenoid relay and the engine stop solenoid. Using them will also allow smaller control lines from the helm and from the keyed switch in the cockpit.
The relays came from Summit Racing and are easy to replace if needed and we will have a spare on-board. Above is how they are wired, showing the wire colors going to the terminal strip.
Above is the wiring diagram for the terminal strip and secondary shorter strip at the lower left. The wiring from the cockpit gauge panel comes to the strip, mainly on the left side above. Most of the wiring from the helm also comes to this terminal strip, with the exception of the NMEA serial wires to and from the cockpit to the Nav. station.
This strip is fed by a heavier fused wire from the main switch/distribution panel at the Nav. Station. Since there is smaller wiring after this panel to the cockpit gauge panel that wiring is protected by a smaller inline fuse shown above.
All the wiring on the smaller terminal strip, lower left, use to go to the keyed starter switch ' I ' terminal (what a mess it was). Now there is only one wire to that terminal from this distribution terminal strip.
The terminal strips are on the bulkhead that separates the quarter berth and the engine compartment. Above the wiring is complete between the terminal strips and the cockpit engine panel. Main power still has to be run to this area and next wiring from the helm will be installed.
