A while back ….

.... I had put together a DCC Command Station with an Arduino Uno and Motor Shield running Gregg's original DCC++ free software, shown above. I also had a $40 Raspberry Pi as a dedicated train computer running JMRI connected to the Uno.

Recently I upgraded the Uno to the free DCC++ EX software that these guys have been working on. I thought I need something that looks better than the hardware mounted on a board so decided to build cases for the Uno and Pi. You will see the cases on this and following pages. This page will highlight a case for the Uno/Motor Shield. Following pages will show cases for an Arduino Mega/Motor Shield combination, a Raspberry Pi case and finally what I call a Mega DCC++ EX case that houses a Mega and shield along with a Pi in a single case. Of course you and I can use these cases for other projects than a DCC Command Station.

The above combination of an Arduino Uno and Arduino Motor Shield along with (not shown) a 9 volt power supply for the Uno and 12 volt power supply for the motor shield (track power) will give you a working DCC Command Station running free DCC++ EX for under $60 using Arduino components or under $50 for Arduino clones. No reason not to give DCC a try. Connect a computer running the free JMRI program and you can run trains with it and/or wireless phone throttles for no additional expense.
