J Starbuck posted the following solution for separating wheel/axles from the gear section on locomotive trucks ( HERE ). He made hardwood angle blocks to do the job but since I have a 3D printer I thought I'd try that approach. It was about a 10 minute job to design the angle blocks using Fusion 360. It took the printer about 3 hours to print both of them but I printed on the highest quality. Might not need to of done that but this is a one off print job so time wasn't a problem.
I had a SD45T-2 with a broken frame so pulled a truck off of it to try out the blocks.
I couldn't believe how easy it was to separate the wheel/axle from the center gear section.
Slide the two blocks towards each other with very little pressure and the parts come apart in a very controlled manner.
I also found that the angle block worked great pressing the parts together. Put the center of the wheel in the slot and press.
Thanks J Starbuck for bringing this to my attention.
